The Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir is home to a rich network of wetlands that support migratory birds, resident species, and diverse aquatic flora. The following list includes 14 Wetland Conservation Reserves of J&K.
1. Chatlam Wetland Reserve
- Notified Area: 8.52 km²
- GIS Area: 0.55 km²
- Key Species (from table): Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)
2. Freshkoori Wetland Reserve
Freshkoori Wetland Reserve was notified in 1945 and supports a rich diversity of migratory birds arriving from different parts of the world including Siberia and Central Asia during winter. Located near Pampore town of south Kashmir in Pulwama district.

- GIS Area: 0.14 km²
- Perimeter: 1.89 km
- Altitude: 1551 m
- Resident Birds: Common Myna, Blue Rock Pigeon, White Cheeked Bulbul, Little Grebe, Himalayan Griffon Vulture, Great Horned Owl, Common Sandpiper, Blue-crowned Night Heron, Eastern Grey Heron, Indian Pond Heron, Central Asian Kingfisher, House Crow.
- Migratory Birds: Northern Pintail, Common Teal, Wigeon, Gadwall, Mallard, Common Pochard, Red-crested Pochard, Greylag Goose, Northern Shoveler, Garganey, Indian Whiskered Tern, Indian Moorhen, Pheasant-Tailed Jacana, Common Swallow, Rufous-backed Shrike, Little Bittern.
- Major Flora: Acorus calamus, Lemna major, Lemna minor, Typha angustifolia, Salvinia spp., Phragmites communis, Mentha piperita, Utricularia aurea, Myriophyllum verticillatum, Nymphaea alba.
3. Gharana Wetland Reserve
Located in Jammu region near the Indo–Pakistan border, about 35 km from Jammu city. Supports 20,000–25,000 migratory birds during peak winter.

- Migratory Birds: Bar-headed Goose, Grey Heron, Purple Heron, Greylag Goose, Gadwall, Northern Pintail, Common Teal, Rock Pigeon, Turtle Dove, Collared Dove, Asian Koel, Greater Coucal, Common Kingfisher, White-throated Kingfisher, Pied Kingfisher, Indian Roller, Shrikes, Little Grebe, Great Cormorant, Cattle Egret, Great Egret.
- Major Flora: Polygonum amphibium, Juncus articulatus, Typha angustifolia, Phragmites communis, Mentha piperita, Utricularia aurea, Myriophyllum verticillatum, Nymphaea alba, Trapa natans, Lemna.
4. Hygam Wetland Reserve
- Notified Area: 7.25 km²
- GIS Area: 7.62 km²
- Key Species: Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)
- Migratory Birds: Mallard, Gadwall, Northern Pintail, Common Teal, Wigeon, Common Pochard, Indian Moorhen, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Common Swallow, Shrikes, Little Bittern, Indian Oriole, Snipe, Slaty-headed Parakeet, European Hoopoe.
- Major Flora: Acorus calamus, Lemna major, Lemna minor, Typha angustifolia, Salvinia spp., Phragmites communis, Mentha piperita, Utricularia aurea, Myriophyllum verticillatum, Nymphaea alba.
5. Hokersar Wetland Reserve
Declared a Ramsar site in 2005 due to its high biodiversity value. Located 10 km from Srinagar, hosting lakhs of migratory birds every winter.

- Altitude: 1565 m
- Resident Birds: Little Grebe, Himalayan Griffon Vulture, Great Horned Owl, Kingfishers, House Crow, Blue Rock Pigeon, Common Sandpiper, Common Myna, Eastern Grey Heron.
- Migratory Birds: Eurasian Wigeon, Greylag Goose, Painted Snipe, Hoopoe, Moorhen, Jacana, Swallow, Shrikes, Little Bittern, Indian Oriole, Parakeet, Ruddy Shelduck.
- Major Flora: Typha angustifolia, Salvinia, Phragmites communis, Mentha piperita, Utricularia aurea, Myriophyllum verticillatum, Nymphaea alba, Salix alba.
6. Kranchoo Wetland Reserve
- Notified Area: 1.28 km²
- GIS Area: 0.22 km²
- Key Species: Common Swallow (Hirundo rustica)
7. Kukarian Wetland Reserve
Located in Jammu district; notified in 1981. Spread across Batore, Bangore, Kukrian, Sandun, and Makwal villages.

- Resident Birds: Cuckoo, Myna, Golden Oriole, Red-vented Bulbul, Kingfishers, Finches, Barbets, Thrushes, Hoopoe, Wagtails, Warblers, Griffon Vulture, Pheasants.
- Migratory Birds: Pond Heron, Grey Heron, Purple Heron, Greylag Goose, Gadwall, Northern Pintail, Common Teal, Rock Pigeon, Collared Dove, Asian Koel, Greater Coucal, Kingfishers, Shrikes, Little Grebe, Bar-headed Goose, Great Cormorant, Cattle Egret, Great Egret.
- Major Flora: Monnj grass (Saccharum munja), Ipomia, Ziziphus jujuba, Vitex negundo, Shisham (Dalbergia sissoo).
8. Malgoam Wetland Reserve
One of the famous wetlands of Kashmir Valley; notified in 1970.

- Resident Birds: Common Sandpiper, Myna, Eastern Grey Heron, Indian Pond Heron, Kingfishers, House Crow, Blue Rock Pigeon, Bulbul, Pariah Kite, Night Heron, House Sparrow, Little Grebe, Himalayan Griffon Vulture, Great Horned Owl.
- Migratory Birds: Common & Red-crested Pochard, Greylag Goose, Northern Shoveler, Garganey, Gadwall, Mallard, Swallow, Shrike, Little Bittern, Oriole, Parakeet, Painted Snipe, Hoopoe, Ruddy Shelduck.

9. Manibugh Wetland Reserve
Notified in 1945; located near Pampore, famous for saffron fields.

10. Mirgund Wetland Reserve
Located 16 km from Srinagar, along Gulmarg road; famous for migratory birds and macrophyte diversity.

11. Nanga Wetland Reserve
Named after Nanga village in Samba tehsil; notified in 1981.

Named after village Pargwal, located on an island of the Chenab River; notified in 1981.

13. Sangral Asa Chak Wetland Reserve
Named after three villages — Asa Chak, Badulian, and Sangral; notified in 1981.
